Do you ever feel like your mind is too noisy, overwhelmed by too much information and endless decisions? Imagine finding a place of silence amidst the chaos, where you can receive clarity and wisdom. Picture quieting your mind, processing everything clearly, and then, from a place of clarity, making calm, confident decisions. This could lift a huge weight off your shoulders and make life feel simpler and easier.
Recently, I received a message from Eva, a young coachee living in the East. She had been selected for an internship but had final exams in South Africa just four days later. Should she spend the money and take the risk?
My instinct was to offer quick advice, but I felt strongly it would be better for her to find her own wisdom. Here’s what I suggested:
- Take a moment to step back. Schedule time to be alone.
- Start your quiet time by trying some mindfulness exercises—focus on breathing or gentle stretching. Get in the moment.
- Find an inner place of peace and calm.
- Reflect a while on who you are (your identity), why you’re here (your purpose), and what’s most important right now.
- Lay out the facts and options. You can pray or surrender the issue if that helps.
- Wait. Maybe take a walk or make some coffee. Then, come back and write down what comes to you.
- Receive the wisdom, make your decision, and act on it.
I assured her that whatever she decided, I’d support her.
Eva decided to wait until the quiet of the early morning to make her decision. She sent me a message later, grateful and relieved. Not only did she get clarity on her next steps, but she also discovered more about herself and what really matters to her. She chose not to take the internship but to follow a career path more aligned with her purpose.
The beauty here is that I did very little. I simply helped her connect with the wisdom available to her, her purpose, and the values she already had. I think that is a better way to help.
Whatever your belief system is, know that wisdom and guidance are always available to help you live the life you’re meant for. Even if she had made a different or “wrong” choice, it would have been okay—because part of life is learning, growing, and discovering the best way to live your best life.
May you find guidance in silence and hear God’s whisper of wisdom.
