These were the triumphant words of a young man, who grew up in the rural Eastern Cape, but who now as a “General Foremen in training” on road building sites had to deal with a huge amount of responsibilities and complexities, far beyond his previous levels of coping abilities. How is business?
Sitting at a coffee shop with a friend I was asked some business advice. He has recently left his previous company and considers “doing his own thing” in the people services sector. In my interpretation this means he would like to offer a service (value proposition) and get paid for it (profit). In the process he will need to identify and understand the needs “out there” in the target market, develop the service in order to address the need effectively, and put the processes in place to sell and deliver. I recently sat in a planning session with a couple of leaders. We started by connecting and sharing about the mind space we are in. Instead of predominant excitement as you would normally expect at the beginning of a new year, we heard stories of real tragedies and challenges – hospitalisations of loved ones, death, and economical setbacks.
