Fly, Eagle, Fly!

A practical tool to help you move from a false identity to your true God-given identity and potential

This tool is inspired by Fly, Eagle, Fly! by Christopher Gregorowski, and especially by the Afrikaans version, Vlieg arend, vlieg hoog.

The story in brief

An eagle’s egg accidentally lands in a chicken coop and hatches there. The young eagle grows up among chickens and gradually comes to believe it is just another chicken. It scratches in the dirt, eats like the chickens, and never attempts to fly.

One day, a man notices that this bird is not a chicken at all, but an eagle. He takes the eagle higher and higher, encouraging it to spread its wings. At first, the eagle is fearful and uncertain because it has always believed a smaller story about itself. But eventually, from a mountain height, it sees more clearly, recognises what it truly is, spreads its wings, and soars.

That is why the story is so powerful.

Many people live below their true potential not because they lack gifting, intelligence or opportunity, but because they have accepted a limited identity and started living from it.

They settle. They adapt. They cope. They play small.

This tool is designed to help you recognise where that may be true for you, and to help you shift from a chicken mentality to an eagle mentality.

The core question

Am I living like an eagle that has learned to think like a chicken?

In other words:

  • Where am I living below my true design?
  • Where have I accepted a false or limited identity?
  • Where am I thinking and acting from fear rather than truth?
  • Where am I being invited to rise?

The Fly, Eagle, Fly Process

This tool has two parts:

Part 1: Identity Reflection

This helps you identify:

  • the chicken coop
  • the false story
  • your true design
  • your “wings”
  • and the truer identity you need to live from

Part 2: 3R2Reset for Identity Shift

This helps you shift, daily and in the moment, from:

  • fear to courage
  • false identity to true identity
  • shrinking back to spreading your wings

So this is not only a reflection tool. It is also a daily practice and a reset tool for everyday life.

Part 1: Identity Reflection

1. Recognise the chicken coop

Start by identifying where you feel confined, diminished or underused.

Ask yourself:

  • Where in my life am I living smaller than I was made to live?
  • In which situations do I shrink back, play safe or hold back?
  • Where do I feel trapped in a role, pattern or expectation that no longer fits?
  • Where am I merely surviving instead of flourishing?

Examples:

  • I keep holding myself back in my work.
  • I avoid stepping up because I fear I may fail.
  • I still live under the shadow of criticism or disappointment.
  • I keep adjusting to what others expect instead of stepping into what I am called to do.

2. Identify the chicken mentality

The eagle did not only live in the chicken coop. It came to think like a chicken.

This is the real issue.

Ask:

  • What false story have I accepted about myself?
  • What limiting identity have I absorbed?
  • What does my inner voice often say?

Complete sentences like:

  • I am just…
  • I could never…
  • People like me do not…
  • I am not the kind of person who…
  • I should rather stay where it is safe because…

Examples:

  • I am not leadership material.
  • I am not capable enough.
  • I should not take risks.
  • Others are made for more, but not me.
  • I must stay small to stay safe.

This is what we mean by chicken mentality:
a pattern of thinking that keeps you small, hesitant, limited and disconnected from your true identity.

3. Remember who you really are

Now begin to move back towards your true design.

Ask:

  • Who am I at my best?
  • What do my best moments reveal about me?
  • What strengths, gifts and qualities come naturally when I am fully alive?
  • What in my life suggests that I am made for more?

Complete the sentence:

I am someone who…

Then go deeper:

I believe I am someone who…

Be specific.

Not:

  • I help people.

But:

  • I help people think more clearly and move forward with greater courage.
  • I bring calm, clarity and direction when others feel overwhelmed.
  • I build bridges between people, purpose and possibility.

4. Notice your wings

The eagle did not need new wings. It needed to recognise the wings it already had.

Ask:

  • What strengths, gifts and capacities do I already have?
  • What do I do well when I am not ruled by fear?
  • What evidence is there that I am made for more?

Write:
My wings are…

Examples:

  • I think deeply and bring perspective.
  • I help people grow.
  • I bring courage, steadiness and hope.
  • I can build, improve and lead.
  • I can see what is possible and help others move towards it.

5. Choose your eagle identity

Now write two or three identity statements that reflect your true design and your chosen way of living.

Start with:

  • I am…
  • I am someone who…
  • I choose to live as…

Examples:

  • I am not made to live small.
  • I am someone who lives with courage, wisdom and purpose.
  • I am made to grow, contribute and rise.
  • I choose not to let old fears define my future.

This is your eagle identity:
the truer, fuller, more courageous way of seeing and living.

Part 2: 3R2Reset for Identity Shift

Moving from Chicken Mentality to Eagle Mentality

Your broader 3R2Reset tool already helps people move from reactivity to wiser response.

In this tool, 3R2Reset is used more specifically:

to help you shift from false identity to true identity

It can be used:

  • as a daily practice
  • or as an in-the-moment reset whenever fear, self-doubt, passivity or old patterns return

1. Recognise

Notice when chicken mentality is taking over

Ask:

  • Am I thinking like a chicken right now?
  • What false story is active in me at the moment?
  • Where am I shrinking back?
  • What am I feeling in my body?
  • What fear is driving me right now?

Signs of chicken mentality may include:

  • fear of stepping up
  • self-doubt
  • comparison
  • passivity
  • over-adapting
  • staying silent when you should speak
  • avoiding action because you feel inadequate
  • choosing comfort over calling

This step is about naming the moment clearly:

Right now I am slipping back into a smaller story.

2. Reset

Shift from chicken mentality to eagle mentality

This is the key movement.

a) Regulate

Calm your body so that fear does not control the moment.

You can:

  • slow your breathing
  • put your feet on the ground
  • pause and become still
  • pray briefly
  • relax your shoulders and jaw
  • use a physical anchor

This helps your nervous system settle so that you can think and choose more clearly.

b) Reframe

Now ask identity-specific questions:

  • What is the chicken story I am believing right now?
  • What is the eagle truth I need to remember?
  • If I were living from my true identity, how would I see this differently?
  • What is true about who I am, rather than what fear is telling me?

Examples:

Chicken mentality says:

  • Stay small.
  • You are not ready.
  • You will fail.
  • Better stay safe.
  • This is not for someone like you.

Eagle mentality says:

  • I am made for more than fear.
  • I do not need to live from limitation.
  • I can grow into what is required.
  • I am called to spread my wings.
  • I do not have to let old beliefs define this moment.

c) Re-energise

Now intentionally align your state with your eagle identity.

You can:

  • sit or stand upright
  • lift your head
  • breathe more deeply
  • picture the eagle spreading its wings
  • speak your eagle identity out loud
  • use a phrase such as:

I am not made to live small.
I am an eagle, not a chicken.
I choose to live from truth, courage and calling.

This is not empty self-talk. It is a deliberate re-anchoring in a truer identity.

3. Respond

Take one eagle step

Now ask:

  • What would an eagle do here?
  • What action fits my true identity?
  • What is one courageous, constructive next step?

Examples:

  • speak up
  • take initiative
  • apply for the opportunity
  • make the call
  • have the conversation
  • step out of passivity
  • stop delaying what you know you need to do

This is where identity becomes behaviour.

Not just:
I see who I am

but:
I act from who I am

How to use this daily

As a morning practice

Ask:

  • Where might I be tempted to think like a chicken today?
  • What is the eagle identity I want to live from today?
  • What truth do I need to remember?

In the moment

Whenever fear, hesitation or self-doubt rises:

  • Recognise the false story
  • Reset into your true identity
  • Respond with one eagle step

As an evening reflection

Ask:

  • Where did I live like a chicken today?
  • Where did I live like an eagle?
  • What helped me rise?
  • What do I want to carry into tomorrow?

A simple summary

Chicken mentality

  • fear-driven
  • small-thinking
  • passive
  • limited by false stories
  • over-adapted
  • disconnected from true identity

Eagle mentality

  • truth-based
  • courageous
  • purposeful
  • aligned with calling
  • willing to rise
  • living from true identity

The Fly, Eagle, Fly 3R2Reset

Recognise

Notice when false identity is taking over.

Reset

Regulate your body, reframe the story, and re-anchor in your eagle identity.

Respond

Take one action that fits your true identity and calling.

A daily anchor

You may want to use this short daily declaration:

I was not made merely to scratch around in fear and limitation.
I was made to spread my wings.
When I feel myself shrinking back, I can recognise it, reset, and respond from truth, courage and calling.

Final reflection

Perhaps the real question is not only:

Can I fly?

Perhaps it is:

When fear tells me to stay in the chicken coop, will I remember that I am an eagle?

Final thought

You do not need to become someone completely different in order to rise.

You may simply need to:

  • recognise the false identity
  • remember the truer one
  • and practise living from it, again and again

Fly, eagle, fly.
Recognise. Reset. Respond.
