A practical reset tool for difficult moments
Adapted and further developed from Tony Robbins‘ State-Story-Strategy framework, integrated with Johann‘s 3R2Reset approach.

Shift your state before you choose your strategy. Pause. Acknowledge your state. Reset your state. Tell a wiser story. Choose a better strategy. Notice and celebrate the improvement. |
When we are under pressure, we often try to solve the problem too quickly. We ask: What must I do? What must I say? How do I fix this? What is the right strategy?
Those questions matter, but they are not always the first questions. If we choose a strategy while we are anxious, defensive, angry, rushed, ashamed or overwhelmed, our strategy may come from survival rather than wisdom.
The basic cycle
Your state affects your story. Your story affects your strategy. Your strategy affects your success and happiness. And your results feed back into your future state.
State → Story → Strategy → Success & Happiness → Celebration → State
The key is to interrupt the cycle at the level of your state. A better state helps you tell a better story. A better story helps you choose a better strategy. A better strategy helps create better results — and celebration reinforces the new pathway.

1. Acknowledge your current state
Start by noticing what is happening inside you. Do not judge it. Just name it.
Ask: What state am I in right now?
Maybe you are anxious, angry, defensive, rushed, overwhelmed, ashamed, guilty, irritated, tired, confused, avoidant or under pressure.
You can say: “I notice I am anxious.” “I notice I feel defensive.” “I notice I am rushing.” “I notice I want to avoid this.” This is not weakness. This is awareness.
Awareness is the beginning of change.
2. Reset your state
Before you try to think better, help your body and nervous system become steadier. You can use the full 3R2Reset process – Recognise → Reset → Respond – or begin with something simple.
Try one or more of these: sit or stand a little taller; put both feet on the ground; breathe slowly; relax your jaw and shoulders; open your hands; look up and widen your vision; slow your pace; take a short walk; pray and become present; remind yourself who you want to be.
Ask: What do I need to do to get into a better state?
The aim is not to become perfectly calm. The aim is to become calm enough, clear enough and grounded enough to choose wisely.
3. From a better state, choose a better story
Once you are more steady, look again at the situation.
Ask: What story am I telling myself? What is a wiser, truer story?
Old story: “This person is against me.” Wiser story: “This person may also be under pressure. I can be curious before I judge.”
Old story: “If I say no, I will disappoint them.” Wiser story: “A respectful no may protect the relationship, my integrity and my capacity.”
This is not about pretending everything is fine. It is about finding a story that is more true, more wise and more helpful.
4. From a better story, choose a better strategy
Now ask: What is the next wise thing to do?
Do not ask this from fear, guilt, anger or ego. Ask it from your better state and wiser story.
Your better strategy may be to ask a question, listen first, delay the decision wisely, clarify expectations, set a boundary, apologise, speak honestly and kindly, ask for help, take one brave step, slow down and rest, pray and wait, have the conversation, say yes with clear conditions, or say no respectfully.
Ask: What strategy will help me respond from wisdom, not reaction?
5. Notice and celebrate the success and happiness improvement
After you choose a better strategy, pause long enough to notice what improved. This is the reinforcement step.
Ask: What is better now? What did I do differently? What success or happiness improvement can I acknowledge? How can I celebrate this small but meaningful win?
Celebration does not need to be big. It can be a quiet moment of gratitude, a deep breath, a smile, writing down the win, thanking God, sharing the progress with a trusted person, or simply saying: “This is growth.”
What gets noticed and celebrated is more likely to be repeated.
The simple worksheet
Use this worksheet when you feel triggered, pressured, stuck, anxious or unsure. You can write brief answers. The goal is not perfect wording – the goal is awareness, reset and wise response.

A practical example
Situation: I need to have a difficult conversation.
Current state: I feel anxious and tense. My chest is tight. I want to avoid the conversation.
Old story: “If I speak honestly, they will become angry or reject me.”
Old strategy: Avoid the conversation and hope it improves.
Likely result: Short-term relief, but long-term tension and confusion.
Reset: I breathe slowly, relax my shoulders, put my feet on the ground, and remind myself: “I can be honest and kind. I do not need to attack or avoid. I can speak with courage and respect.”
Wiser story: “This conversation may be uncomfortable, but it can create clarity and trust.”
Better strategy: Ask for a good time to talk. Speak calmly. Name the issue. Listen well. Stay respectful.
Improvement and celebration: More clarity. Less avoidance. Greater peace. A healthier relationship. More self-respect. I pause, thank God quietly, and say: “This is growth.”
Final thought
You may not always be able to control what happens around you. But you can learn to pause, acknowledge your state, reset your state, tell a wiser story, choose a better strategy, and move towards healthier success and deeper happiness. Better state → Better story → Better strategy → Better success & happiness → Celebration Shift your state before you choose your strategy. |
