The Power of Your Backstage Investment

I hope this message finds you in good health and high energy. I mean it, because today I want to share a simple lesson that I had to learn the hard way.  I realised how important it is to nurture our lives “backstage” to shine on the “front stage.” Every time I have neglected my “backstage” existence my “front stage” started to suffer. And as you know, the pain it causes is not worth it.

However, in our fast-paced world, we often find ourselves caught up in the pursuit of public performance and achievements, neglecting the essential aspects that lie behind the scenes. Just like the fable of Esop’s golden goose, we may be blessed with the ability to perform and achieve at very high levels (the golden eggs), but if we fail to take care of ourselves as the source (the goose itself), our ability to deliver will eventually be depleted, leaving us with little to offer on the front stage.

Renowned author Stephen Covey introduced the PC -> P principle: Production Capacity delivers Production. This simple yet profound idea emphasizes the importance of taking care of our “backstage” investments (our Production Capacity) to ensure sustainable performance (Production) in all aspects of our lives.

So, how can we take care of our “PC” or “backstage” investment? Here are some essential practices I have learned during this transformative journey – perhaps you can give yourself a score out of ten on each of these five points:

  1. Sufficient Rest: Rest is not merely about getting enough sleep, although that is crucial for our well-being. It also involves setting aside time for daily reflection and quiet time, celebrating life experiences, and learning from them. Allow yourself moments of joy, fun and laughter to cherish life’s simple pleasures.
  2. Daily Routines and Rhythms: Rather than seeking balance, prioritise and focus on the right things at the right time. Our lives are shaped by our routines and habits, so invest time in cultivating positive daily practices that align with your values and goals.
  3. Physical Health: Don’t neglect the importance of exercising and strengthening your body. Engaging in regular physical activity not only boosts your overall health but also enhances your cognitive abilities and emotional well-being, helping you to perform better on the “front stage.”
  4. Relationships: Cherish meaningful connections with family and friends. Enjoy good food and wine together, go on a hike with a group of friends, or get together to enjoy the rugby or soccer. Invite that friend that you miss for a nice cup of coffee.
  5. Continuous Learning: Commit to lifelong learning and personal growth. Invest in expanding your knowledge, skills, and perspectives. The more you invest in yourself, the greater your capacity to create a positive impact on the “front stage” where you can serve and impact others.

Measuring yourself against these five points, how are you doing?

Most of us basically know what to do to live a sustainable life. The challenge is to be intentional about it – to make our plans, then put them to practice and into habits, doing it over and over.

Wishing you a fulfilling and sustainable journey ahead with a great “backstage” that will lead to a vibrant “front stage” and sustainable growth, success, and joy.
